Muzzo Uysal, Carney Family Endowed Professor in Isenberg School of Management’s Hospitality and Tourism Management (HTM) Department at UMass Amherst, has been appointed president of the International Academy for the Study of Tourism through 2026.
The academy’s goal is to further the scholarly research and professional investigation of tourism. Its membership is comprised of highly accomplished tourism researchers from around the world. Fellows of the academy—which is headquartered at Hong Kong Polytechnic University—are elected to membership based on their scholarly achievements and contributions to our understanding of the field of tourism.
In his first message as president, published in the academy’s July newsletter, Uysal said to the membership: “Together, let us harness our combined expertise to venture into new realms of transformative research, education, and outreach. Together, we can shape the future of tourism, promoting responsible and inclusive practices that improve the well-being of both travelers and host communities.”
The United States has 21 active fellows as members of the academy, and the membership is capped at 75. Isenberg HTM Professor Albert Assaf, Hadelman Family Faculty Fellow, is also an inducted fellow.
