HTM and Accounting Double Major
Assurance Audit Intern, Ernst & Young

The advantage of being a double major is learning how hospitality companies function. Someday, I hope to work in accounting for a hospitality company. It has been beneficial to learn both accounting skills and hospitality skills to 1) reach my goal, and 2) stand out when applying to jobs. During one of my interviews, I was told that auditing is not just about the actual auditing, but also about the service to your clients. I have been able to apply my hospitality major and knowledge about service to this aspect of auditing and it has helped me get the positions listed above.

My future desired career is to work in accounting for a hospitality company. Having both majors will make me stand out, as well as get the information I need for both areas of the career. Also, with the double major I have been able to acquire the 150 credits required for the CPA exam. This will save me money (as I will not have to get my masters to reach the 150 credits) as well as get my career started sooner.

During my time as an HTM major, I have learned how all the different parts of companies connect and work together. Learning about the management side in my HTM classes and learning about the financial side in my Accounting classes has made me well-rounded and given me a full picture of how companies function.

What I love most about HTM are the opportunities and connections. There are many clubs you can join and meet great people. These clubs have networking trips, connections with alumni, and opportunities for E-Board positions. I am the Treasurer of the American Hotel & Lodging Association; it has been valuable experience and something interviewers always ask about when they see it on my resume. There is always something going in HTM, not to mention the HTM Career Day! It taught me how to talk to recruiters and how to navigate career days. One year, I went just to practice talking to recruiters and I ended up getting an internship! It is an amazing thing that the HTM Department offers and it is all student run.
