I am working directly with the CMO at Rekener, Inc., a tech startup located in Charlestown. They've created a software that helps B2B companies, and business operations leaders, or BizOps leaders, maximize their revenue and optimize the connection between their sales and the marketing teams. As the marketing intern, I've done a variety of tasks from helping to plan and execute events to designing and creating blog post graphics to editing content, and much more.
HOW DID YOU FIND THIS OPPORTUNITY?
A friend of mine reached out because she was contacted by an acquaintance tasked with finding candidates for the position. She thought that I would be a good fit for the company from what her friend had told her, and so I sent in my resume and started the application process.
WHAT HAS YOUR EXPERIENCE BEEN LIKE AND WHAT HAVE YOU LEARNED?
My experience has be incredible. My boss has helped me to quickly learn about B2B companies, as well as BizOps. The nature of the company is very hands-off when it comes to their management style, but they are all more than happy to answer questions and help throughout my internship. My boss would talk me through the different tasks in line for the day and I would be expected to complete them on my own; no "checking-in" was necessary. This helped me to learn fast and feel confident in my work. I've learned not only the industry in which I was working but design skills, marketing skills, and writing skills that will help me throughout my career.
WHAT ADVICE DO YOU HAVE FOR OTHER STUDENTS?
Apply to jobs that don't seem to be your "dream job" because you'll never know what kinds of opportunities you'll open up and skills you'll have because of it. I didn't want to work in a start-up this summer because I worked in one last summer. I wanted to have more a corporate, or at least a more established business experience. However, I am so glad that I interned with Rekener this summer. I have been able to expand my network far greater than I thought I would be able, and I have learned valuable skills and gained confidence in my work that will help me excel during my career.
