The Isenberg Career Day is on Tuesday, September 23rd from 11am-4pm in the Campus Center Auditorium!
Career fairs can be intimidating with so many companies, recruiters, and students all in one vicinity. You may be asking yourself if a career fair is even worth attending and how you can stand out at a career fair. The answer to the first part is easy: YES you should attend a career fair! It cannot hurt you to go and network with various companies of interest to you, and the recruiters there want to see students; that’s why they’re there! Now that you’ve decided to attend, here’s how to be successful:
- Research the fair to know who is coming. By doing this you can target specific companies you would like to network with, and if you are under a time constraint this can be even more useful to plan your time
- Research the companies of interest to you. Know what they do, what industry they’re in, and some current events happening with their company
- Prepare a quick “elevator pitch” that includes a quick summary of who you are and what your goals are for your future (basically why you are speaking with the recruiter/company)
- Dress to impress. Wearing a suit is not going too far
- Ask anyone you speak with for their business card. In return, give them one of your cards if you have them, or some sort of contact information.
- Write thank you notes. This can be either by mail or by email. The important thing is you want to be remembered, and you want to thank someone for giving you their time to speak with them
