Welcome to the 2023 Dean’s Report, which celebrates the students, faculty, staff, alumni, and friends who make Isenberg such an innovative, exciting, and successful community.
I hope you enjoy reading about some of the new initiatives we’ve taken on this year as we continue pursuing excellence in academic research and thought leadership, donor impact, and other priorities that advance our reputation as a top business school.

Paulette Palomares ’24 and Fiana Herscovici ’24 both work as Career Peers for the Chase Career Center, assisting less experienced Isenberg students with resumes, cover letters, and career planning. The program—which this fall includes 15 Career Peers who each see multiple students per week—has become an important part of the Office of Career Success.
More than 800 students enrolled in Senior Lecturer Kerri Bohonowicz’s Accounting 221 course had the opportunity to learn about life as accounting professionals from a panel of 14 UMass Amherst alumni.
Juliano Wahab ’23, a marketing and computer science major, won $41,000 in equity-free funding for the venture he founded with computer science major Alex Rohrberg at the annual Innovation Challenge, hosted by the Berthiaume Center for Entrepreneurship.
The Senior Gift Campaign raised money from 80% of the Class of 2023 to have stock tickers installed in both the Alfond Atrium and the Business Innovation Hub. Since 2009, senior classes have worked together to raise funds so they could leave behind a gift for the school, ranging from scholarships to charging stations to a booth for taking free professional headshots.
The Isenberg School of Management is committed to fostering a diverse, inclusive, and welcoming environment for students, faculty, and staff. This fall Isenberg became one of the first undergraduate business programs to require all majors to complete a course called Introduction to Diversity and Inclusion in Business.
Isenberg's HTM Career Day is the largest student-run career day on the East Coast. In 2023, it hosted more than 50 companies and hundreds of students, who gained industry experience and networked with recruiters in pursuit of internships, full-time jobs, and information-sharing. The event's 50th anniversary is 2024.
Seniors in Tools for Professional Success, the honors marketing course at Isenberg, take their education to the next level by collaborating with real corporate clients, including Boston Scientific and Newell Brands.
The 2023 event, held in February, celebrated the 10th anniversary of the student-run conference More than 450 attendees heard keynote speaker Amy Shecter, a UMass alumna and CEO of Ever/Body.
"The person that you're counting on is you," Schecter told the audience.
The conference focused on taking risks, building confidence, and navigating the workplace, and included a career reception.

The annual ranking of online MBA programs by the Financial Times put Isenberg's Online MBA at number 2 in the nation and number 5 in the world for 2023.
Interest in Isenberg's one-year MS in Business Analytics program has increased since the degree was launched in fall 2017. The new MBA/MS in Business Analytics dual degree, offered on-campus and online, welcomed more than 25 students this fall.
Isenberg’s PhD program was thrilled to welcome a group of 15 incoming students to Amherst for the fall semester. The group originates from around the world and brings a diverse and interesting skillset to the UMass academic community.
Dr. Melissa Ko started taking some business classes through the Isenberg Online MBA program when she found herself with more and more responsibility for her practice’s operations. She was surprised just how useful the program was in her day-to-day work right away.
Jenna Cox completed her master’s degree in accounting this past spring and immediately joined PwC as a state and local tax associate in the New York City office: “The resources that we are presented with allow students to expand their knowledge and seamlessly transition into the professional world."
Isenberg graduate students have been among the first to experience a new learning platform called Canvas, which is known for its flexibility, ease of use, and mobile capabilities.
Monideepa Tarafdar, Charles J. Dockendorff endowed professor and PhD coordinator in information systems, examined this question in research published recently in The Journal of Strategic Information Systems. She and her team studied diversity, equity, and inclusion programs at a recruiting firm in the United Kingdom, and found that technology could enhance their effects.
As a member of the International Academic Board at the Kyiv School of Economics (KSE), Isenberg Professor Anna Nagurney was inspired to support her fellow scholars during the war following Russia’s invasion of Ukraine. She helped spearhead the creation of a multilevel partnership between UMass Amherst and KSE, which has allowed Ukrainian scholars to continue their research.
Javier Reyes, who joined the University of Massachusetts Amherst as chancellor this past summer, was also named a professor of finance at the Isenberg School of Management.
Isenberg currently has 37 titled faculty positions—a number that has almost doubled since 2017. Being able to appoint faculty members to all the new endowed and term positions is key to the school ’s effort to attract and retain talented instructors and researchers and to support their best-in-class teaching and scholarly activities.
2022, Isenberg faculty members had their work published in 31 premier journals, up from 25 the previous year and just 17 in 2019, according to Associate Dean of Research George Milne
Over the four decades that Todd Barry and his wife Mignon have owned Moby Dick’s restaurant on Cape Cod, they have utilized the knowledge he gained through UMass Amherst’s Hospitality and Tourism Management department at Isenberg.
Sandy Barbour has established an endowed fund with a $500,000 gift that will provide financial support for the Mark H. McCormack Department of Sport Management’s ongoing initiative to prepare women for careers in the sport and entertainment industry.
When Peter Resnick began working in forensic accounting, the field was up and coming, with a small number of firms working in the discipline of investigating financial fraud.
Douglas ’71 and Diana Berthiaume became the most generous cash donors in UMass Amherst history with their gift of $20 million, which will enhance Isenberg’s faculty support, groundbreaking research, and innovative spaces where academic excellence flourishes. It includes $7 million for creation of endowed faculty positions and chancellor professorships to attract and retain top talent; $1.5 million for endowed support of doctoral fellowships and a new behavioral research lab; and $1.5 million for expanded faculty research at the Berthiaume Center for Entrepreneurship.
Stephanie Krawczyk '15, director of restaurants and bars at the Lido House hotel in Newport Beach, California, was a top 30 finalist in a competition through the United States Bartenders' Guild with a recipe for a non-alcoholic spritz cocktail.
Paul and Gail McDonald, who have been longtime members of the Isenberg community, recently gave $1 million to fund an endowed fellowship that works to attract and retain the very best faculty in the business community.
In September, the Isenberg community gathered at the Boston Public Library to celebrate Leaders of Impact, including keynote speaker Yvonne Hao, the Massachusetts secretary of the Executive Office of Economic Development. Leader of Impact awards were presented to Judith O'Connell '93, managing partner and CEO at Champlain Investment Partners, and Lyman Phillips '16, founding principal and CEO of Golden Lion Capital Investments. Our mission to provide access to quality higher education regardless of wealth or social status is supported by gifts from donors, corporate partners, and many others. In recent years, we have been able to dramatically increase Isenberg's scholarship fund so that hundreds of students received support.
Support from thousands of donors has allowed Isenberg to make significant progress on the school's priorities to maintain excellence and improve access for students seeking a quality business education These generous contributions, along with the revenue generated from our innovative graduate professional programs, provide Isenberg with a solid financial foundation.
